Valentine Design Pt.2 - The 'Love-Flower'
As it continues to rain this soggy Feb we thought a good time to post a nice vid from last summer of a fantastic garden plant that does well in SE London gardens. Agapanthus has many common names but originally derives from the Greek 'Agape' = Love + 'anthos' = Flower. There's many reasons to love it:
1) Does well in our varied soils as well as pots. We've planted them in Charlton, Blackheath,Greenwich, Little Heath, Westcombe Park etc etc no problemo
2) Beautiful drumsticks of flowers attractive to pollinators. We've found bees and hover flies particularly use them
3) Drought resistant: we have some in south facing pots that get baked and often forget to water ! (basically Cobbler's shoes syndrome...). they flower fantastically!
4) Relatively pest resistant inc slugs and snails !!!
5) Propagation is super easy, just divide mature clusters with a spade or kitchen knife. We bought two Lapis luzuli originally some years ago and have divided them multiple times
6) Massive selection to choose from regarding size and flower colour. While their colour range is blue to white they work really well contrasting with hotter colours as in this Charlton example (our garden!) or combining with other cooler colours for a subtle chilled vibe.
As long as they're not sat in soggy soil or planted in shade you can't go wrong. If you have a talent for killing plants this is the perennial for you!
